Domestic U.S. air travelers faced major flight headaches Tuesday as a powerful Nor’easter brought a mix of snow, ice, rain, and wind to much of the East Coast and Northeastern United States. Coupled with high winds of 35 mph or more, some areas saw blizzard type conditions.
Flights cancelled in one region at major hubs produce a ripple effect resulting in flight delays and cancellations at other airports, as well, despite not being directly affected by the winter storm.
According to data from FlightAware, as of 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday, more than 1,100 flights had been cancelled in the U.S. due to the weather.
The greatest number of cancellations are concentrated around some of the nation’s biggest hub airports in the Northeast, as seen in the map above from FlightAware. New York’s LaGuardia Airport was the most heavily affected as of this writing, with more than 220 cancellations by mid-morning Tuesday — more than 40% of the entire day’s departure schedule from that airport.
Other major airports that had weather-related cancellations include John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark/Liberty International Airport, and Boston Logan International Airport.
