Mount Ağrı, Turkey’s highest peak at 5,137 meters and widely known as Mount Ararat of biblical fame, has seen the season’s first intense snowfall atop its summit according to a report in the October 8th edition of Hürriyet daily news. Mount Ararat is a dormant volcano in eastern Turkey that is generally covered in snow except for some years in peak summer months. It’s also known as Masis, Mount Agirî, and Mount Ağrı. The mountain is a sacred site for the Armenian people and is traditionally considered the landing place for Noah’s Ark.
While the summit remains below freezing which will allow the snowcap to persist, mild weather with temperatures fluctuating between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius will prevail at lower elevations according to data from the Turkish State Meteorological Service.
