Lesotho, a small African kingdom completely surrounded by South Africa, boasts the continent’s only operating ski resort south of the equator. Due to good snowfall this year, Africa News reports the Afriski ski resort in Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains, is doing good business.

Although cold winters in Southern Africa are not rare, snow, especially enough snow to support a ski industry, is. Yet, Lesotho, the only country on earth where nowhere is less than a 3,200 feet above sea level, has snow with sufficient regularity to support the ski resort.

Numerous pictures accompanying an Indian Express story about this ski season at Afriski tell a tale of rare winter fun in Southern Africa, a unique experience for the continent.
