Snow Brains is reporting that a cold front forecast to sweep across Australia the weekend of May 16 through 18, is expected to drop snow across the Australian Alps.

“A cold front over the Southern Ocean is expected to bring a strong southerly change to southeast Australia during Friday,” Snow Brains writes. “The southerly airstream between the high and the trough over the Tasman is expected to be maintained through next week.

“Snow is expected to fall from around 1,300-1,400 meters (4,265-4,593 feet) on Friday and Saturday,” Snow Brains’ report continued.

The snowfall is not expected to be significant, however the temperatures are expected to remain low enough for resorts with snow canons to begin generating snow, which will stick, allowing them to open.

Meanwhile Australia’s southern Oceania neighbor, New Zealand, has had good pre-season snowfall which continued through mid-May. As a result, Snow-Forecast writes it is possible some ski resorts there will actually begin operations early, allowing skiing weeks before their planned opening date of June 15.
