Nearly Double Normal Snowpack Keeps Chilean Ski Areas Open

Snow levels across Chile are nearly double the normal amount of accumulation for the year, according to On The Snow.

“Snowpack levels across Chile are currently 185% of normal,” reports On The Snow. “Chile’s annual average snowfall total is 99.”

Each of the six resorts detailed in the On the Snow report had more than half of their lifts and trails open. Two of the five resorts, Valle Nevado and Ski Portillo, had every trail open, and two resorts, La Parva and Ski Portillo, had 100 percent of their lifts operating. Four of the six resorts reported having more than 80 percent of their ski runs open on August 8.

Snow-Forecast gave provided more detailed reporting on the ski conditions in Chile, reporting on 21 resorts. Every one of those resorts reported snow falling in the past six days, with a third of them receiving 3 or more inches of fresh snow in the past four days. Weather forecasts call for 20 of the 21 resorts to receive some amount of snowfall, topping 11 inches at one resort, in the next six days.
