CTV News reports that a severe winter storm dumped more than a meter of heavy snow, nearly two meters in some areas, on a swath of Nova Scotia over the weekend of February 3rd and 4th, resulting in the closure of some government offices and compromising travel in some areas.

Cleanup in Nova Scotia could take days after more than a meter of snow piled up in some parts of the province over the weekend.
Federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan says Parks Canada will be sending snow removal equipment and the Canadian Coast Guard is sending helicopters.

John Lohr, Nova Scotia’s minister responsible for emergency management, says the province had already sought help from neighboring provinces but needed federal aid to maintain public safety.
A state of local emergency that was declared on Sunday in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, which includes Sydney, is set to remain in place for the rest of the week.
As a result of the heavy snow and poor road conditions some non-emergency services have been reduced during the winter emergency.
The storm, which was accompanied by extremely cold temperatures and high winds, dumped more than 60 inches of snow on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, reported the Weather Channel. Fox News ran videos of snowplows clearing more than 5 feet of snow, reporting that approximately 1,000 plow crews were brought into service across the province to clear all the snow.
