Police in Cumbria, a county in North West England bordering parts of Scotland, declared a major winter event after heavy snow fell, causing accidents and snarling traffic, reports The Guardian.

The Guardian writes:

Cumbria police have declared a major incident and warned against unnecessary journeys after heavy snowfall on the county’s roads, as freezing conditions hit the UK.

Police said a “multi-agency response” is under way, with reports of cars stuck in traffic and some roads in the South Lakes area impassable due to the snow.

Cumbria police said the M6 southbound between junctions 38 and 37 was blocked due to jackknifed lorries and that the A595 between Millom and Furness was impassable.

Cumbria and Scotland were not the only areas impacted by severe cold and snow. Amber and yellow weather alerts were also issued for the Midlands, Yorkshire, the north-east and north-west England, and north and central Wales.

Numerous flights were cancelled, and others were delayed, due to icy and snowy conditions at Stansted airport in London and at Glasgow airport in Scotland, as a wide swath of the United Kingdom saw temperatures dip to -10℃ on December 2.
