The National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento has issued a winter storm warning for most Northern California mountain areas above 2000 feet saying, “Wednesday night through Friday morning as a strong winter storm brings heavy mountains and upper foothill snow. Mountain travel is HIGHLY DISCOURANGED!”
For the Sierra Nevada, and Interstate 80 they say, “Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet. Winds gusting as high as 55 to 65 mph.”
For the Cascades, and Interstate 5 the forecast is almost equally bad, “Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 30 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.”
The NWS provided a set of highway travel maps on Twitter, showing snow accumulation forecasts in an attempt to discourage drivers from attempting to cross the mountain summits.
