Snowfall covering the Sani Pass in KwaZulu-Natal caused tour operators to cancel trips due to dangerous road conditions on September 9th and 10th.

“Light snowfall covered the Sani Pass in KwaZulu-Natal, creating picturesque scenes, but led to tour cancellations due to slippery conditions,” reported News 24.  “The SA Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive snow in the Eastern Cape escarpment and KZN high grounds, which is expected to persist through Tuesday.”

Sani Pass Tours reported that the snow began falling early in the morning of Monday, September 9 and that on Tuesday that area remained covered with snow.

Sani Pass Tours canceled tours up the mountain as the snow and icy road conditions made it dangerous to drive.

“[We awoke to] beautiful, white-coated mountains,” Esme Clacton of Sani Mountain Tours told News 24, “This morning [Tuesday], the sunrise was so beautiful, and there were some nice pictures.

“Some people do come down for just snow, but many come for the drive to the mountains,” Clacton continued. “The sad part is that you can’t drive up the mountains whenever there is snow because it’s slippery.”
