Kenya’s weather agency, Kenya Met, is blaming unusual for the season rain blowing in from Ethiopia to the north, clouds, and a shift in weather patterns for an unusually cold September, a weather trend that the agency forecast to continue throughout the month.

“The month of September has normally been one that you can pick any day for an outdoor event and you will be fine weather-wise, but that is not the case now,” David Gikungu, director of Kenya Met, told The Star in an interview discussing the unusually cold weather. “In Ethiopia, they have had very heavy rain during this season.

“After that the sun starts its way towards the south and as it goes it will be overhead at the Equator sometime this month,” Gikungu said to The Star. “With the cloud bunch it means we cannot have intensive heat from the sun … [i]t is a departure from what we call normal or average [temperature].”

Kenya Met projects that the majority of the country will continue to experience cloudy conditions and colder than usual temperatures for the remainder of September, including the regions of Bomet, Bungoma, Embu, Kakamega, Kericho, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nandi, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Tharaka-Nithi, and Vihiga.
