An unusual weather system over the Bay of Bengal and India’s coast delivered unseasonably cold temperatures to the tropical Indian city of Bengaluru.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recognizes four seasons in India: Winter running December to early April; Summer or pre-monsoon, April to June; Monsoon or rainy season from June to September; and Post-monsoon from October to December. Despite Winter being long passed, the Bangalore Mirror reports that a tropical depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, dropped temperatures sharply on July 20, resulting in the city recording its lowest temperature of 2024.
“In less than 24 hours, Bengaluru saw a drop of 3.2 degrees Celsius in its daytime temperature. On Thursday [July 19], the city recorded 27℃ degrees, but on Friday, it was just 23.8℃ degrees, making it the coldest day of 2024 so far,” said CS Patil, a scientist at IMD told the Times of India.
Due to continued cloudy weather, temperatures were expected to possibly drop even lower in the coming days, ranging between 20℃ and 27℃, the latter being normal for the time of year.
