Eastern Australia Warnings for Damaging Winds, Snow, and Blizzards

ABC News in Australia reports that last weeks cold front incursion continued into the weekend, saying:

Parts of eastern Australia are set for another round of fierce wintry weather, with warnings of frost, damaging winds, hail and another dumping of snow from Friday.

It comes after icy cold conditions earlier this week plunged temperatures in parts of tropical Australia to near zero, with snow and sleet as far north as Queensland’s Granite Belt.

This follow-up winter weather system is packing a punch:

Several severe weather warnings have already been issued by the BOM [Bureau of Meteorology] for south-eastern Australia.

It includes a warning of damaging wind gusts for the Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia from Friday morning, persisting through to Saturday morning for parts of the coastal fringe.

There is also a warning of damaging winds and blizzards across Victoria’s north-east alpine regions, and New South Wales alpine region from Friday evening.

 

The BOM issued this statement:

For the ALPINE REGION ABOVE 1900 METRES: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 100 km/h with peak gusts of around 130 km/h are occurring tonight, with BLIZZARD conditions likely. These conditions should continue into Saturday before easing late Saturday evening.

BOM also reports the lowest temperature as of this writing is at Mt Hotham, VIC at -2.0°C (28.4°F). Temperatures are expected to go even lower over the weekend. In addition, the BOM has issued snow forecasts for ski resort areas up to 50 centimeters (1.6 feet) of fresh snow.
