Although snow does fall some years in May in the mountains bordering California and Nevada, the amount of snow that fell recently is relatively rare.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office reported on heavy snow falling on and around Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada, on May 5.

“Lake Tahoe, which splits the border between California and Nevada, received 26 inches of snow in 24 hours between May 4 and 5, according to reports,” said Truthful.

“May showers are snow showers today…,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

The heavy snow delayed the opening of Palisades Tahoe resort, but once the slopes were ready it made for great skiing the resort reported on its X feed:

Lake Tahoe lies in the Northern part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which experienced their heaviest single day of snowfall for the of the year. The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab reported that 26.4 inches of snow fell on May 5, topping the 2023/2024 single day winter snowfall record set on March 3, by 2.6 inches.

According to a second Storyful story, other areas in the mountain range reported receiving even deeper snowfall. For instance, weather officials reported that 31 inches of snow fell at Lassen Peak.
