Alaska’s News Source (ANS) reported on April 8th that the latest round of snow is likely to break records for winter’s snowfall in Anchorage, where more than 130.5 inches of snow has fallen already this year.
“Warnings and watches are up ahead of a pair of storms from Wednesday to Thursday. Heavy snow, high winds and blizzard conditions are likely,” writes ANS. “Upper levels – low over Bristol Bay. Snow shower activity starts tomorrow over the BB coast.
“A winter storm watch begins Wednesday morning over the Kuskokwim Delta and Nunivak Island. Storm snow total accumulations of up to 8 inches possible along with wind gusts to 50 mph,” ANS says. “Farther north, over the interior Seward Peninsula, snowfall estimates of 10-14 inches and winds up to 55 mph are contained in a winter storm watch that also begins Wednesday morning, going through Thursday morning.”
Any snow that falls in Anchorage is likely to result in a new record being set for the season, WION is reporting.
The 2023/2024 winter season is only the third time Anchorage has topped 130 inches of snowfall in a season. The record of 134.5 inches was set in the 2011/2012 season. The previous record, of 132.6 inches was recorded in anchorage nearly 70 years ago during the 1954/1955 winter season. Snow in April and even into early May is not uncommon in Anchorage. With just four inches left to break the record and the official snow season not over until June, Alaska Daily News, among other outlets, is reporting chances are high that Anchorage will set a new snow record this year.
