Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland, received its first snowfall in late-September, a few days before normal for the area. (see the image above)
The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s official standards require that “a centimeter of snow measured on the ground at a weather station by 9 AM on the day in question in order to be classed as a ‘first snow,’” reports Yle, a Finish government news agency.
Three centimeters of snow were measured on the morning of September 24, three days before the first recorded snow of the year is normally recorded.
“Overnight precipitation in Lapland brought three centimeters of snow to Kilpisjärvi in Enontekiö,” wrote Yle. “Other parts of the far northwest of Finnish Lapland got a heavy dose of sleet.”
