Fort Wayne, Indiana saw its temperatures dip to near record low territory over the August 20th, 21st, and 23rd three day period, reports WANE, remarking that the unusual cold was driven by a “cool, crisp air mass” blowing into the Northeastern portion of the state.

After warning on August 20 that temperatures in Fort Wayne might break the exiting minimum record for the date of 45℉, temperatures fell short of breaking or tying the record, with a low of 47℉.

Still, the August 21st temperature was the second lowest on record, nearing the record of 45℉ set in 1908 and tied in 1950.

With a low of 48℉ on August 22, it marked three straight days of lows in the forties, more than 10 degrees below the normal August average low temperature in Fort Wayne. Daytime highs in the low to mid-70s have also been well below the normal average for the month.

“Our average first low in the 40s in the second half of the year in Fort Wayne does not come until September 26th and our average first low temperature of 45 degrees happens on October 8th,” said WANE, reporting on the unusual cold spell. “This means we are over a month ahead of schedule for air this chilly in the morning ….”
