May Snowstorm Brings More Than a Foot of Snow to California’s Sierra Nevada,

News2-KTVN Reno reports:

It’s not unheard of for it to snow in the Sierra during the month of May, but it’s usually fairly light.

For the first time in recent history, the National Weather Service Reno issued a Winter Storm Warning during the month of May. It went from Saturday morning through Sunday morning as a strong cold front moved through.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento noted on their Facebook page, “A busy start to our month brought periods of heavy mountain snow and light to moderate rainfall to the Valley,” and provided a map of snow totals as seen below:

The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab reported that they are at 157% of median value for this date:
