The Watchers has reported several cities in Argentina have seen previous cold temperature records fall during an unusually cold fall and beginning to winter in the South American country.

“As a polar wave continues to affect Argentina, the city of Gualeguaychú hit a record-breaking low temperature of -7.6 °C (18.3 °F) on July 9, 2024,” The Watchers wrote. “Meanwhile, all provinces of Argentina recorded temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F) on July 10.”

Gualeguaychú’s previous record of -7.0℃ was set nearly 80 years ago, on June 23, 1945.

“The severe cold snap prompted authorities to issue numerous Red, Orange, and Yellow alerts for extreme cold,” said The Watchers.

Gualeguaychú, with a population 110 000, was not the only city nor Entre Rios the only province to set new or tie existing cold temperature records on July 9. With a low of -7.5 °C (18.5 °F) in Venado Tuerto, the temperature tied the record low for the month of July. Argentina’s Meteorological Agency (SMN) reported that almost every Argentine province experienced below zero temperatures on July 10 (see the translated X post below, and the graphic above).
